KERRY O'BRINE FASHION - WORK PLACEMENT 1

WORK PLACEMENT AT ROBERT CARY-WILLIAMS'
STUDIO PRIOR TO AUTUMN/WINTER 2005 SHOW

My work placement at Robert Cary-Wiiliams involved helping work towards the A/W 2005 show (15th Feb 2005).

I worked hard with the other girls and had an extremely enjoyable time at Robert Cary-Williams.

I worked on the rope garments for his show, stitching in all the rope cording (see left)

The variety of work I got involved in made the experience invaluable. The jobs ranged from unpacking boxes and checking the T-shirts to spending a day at a shooting range.

Robert’s techniques and ideas are very experimental and hands on so I learnt new skills and techniques. The day of the show was very exciting, it was great to see garments we worked and helped on going down the catwalk.

Production

The day at the shooting range

I travelled with another of the work experience girls to the shooting range. We arrived there and met up with the men who would be shooting. We were there to help with the shooting of Robert’s T-Shirts. We unloaded a box of T-shirts each one already wrapped individually and clipped about 3 to the wire mesh against the hay bales. We would move out of the way and then the men would shoot the T-shirts. We would then remove them from the hay bales and pack them up in their box again.

Catwalk Garments

Another side to production is the more expensive catwalk garments. Robert would drape the fabric on the stand and pin it in place. I then sewed wherever he had pinned. This pattern would be repeated until Robert had achieved what he wanted. The dress would look unstable yet still was wearable.

Shoes - dyed and stamped for Robert's signature look.
